look at the hoover line of upright vacuum cleaners, they probably have the best prices in every line they sell, from 100 bucks all the way up to 300 bucks.

dyson vacs are good but too many plastic parts that break and the hoses that detach from the vacuum become brittle over time, little slit like holes form on the hose dropping over all vacuum pressure.

  1. Oh man – it’s tough. There’s such junk out there right now. All I can say is be really careful. Ask at a vacuum repair place for an old electrolux or Kirby and Hoover. Or put the word out. You used to be able to find an old Hoover from the 60’s for $ 5 – change the beater on it and have nearly a new machine. They’re pretty amazing.

But there’s a lot of newer machines you REALLY want to avoid – all plastic things that are so badly engineered that it’s scary.

  2. Consumer Reports rates these as the best for the money. Upright bagless 1) Hoover windtunnel $ 130 2) Eureca airspeed $ 120. Upright bagged 1) Hoover tempo widepath $ 100 2) Eureca boss smart $ 160. Canister type 1) Kenmore progressive $ 250. Hope this gives you more to pick from. March 2012 issue.
