I was cat-sitting and after the cat left, used a new vacuum to tidy the apartment. The vacuum must’ve sucked up and heated up some cat litter because now the apartment and the vacuum specifically stink. I sprayed the filter with febreeze and cleaned out the dirt container (no bag in this vacuum), but the smell still stays and gets stronger when the vacuum is on. I’m considering vacuuming up something like baking soda to absorb the odor throughout the vacuum, but thought I’d seek advice first.
well not knowing what kind of vacum it is i would caution you on the baking soda, as it is very fine and could get into the motor.
Backing soda is know to be a fine abrasive and could deffinately harm the motor. Best thing i can think of is use an air compressor and blow out the inside if the vacuum. you could leave sone baking soda inside it but i wouldn’t suck it through..
I was going to suggest baking soda, but it looks like you are ready going to use it. I would.

Change your bag in the vaccum cleaner. Our dog smells it up too. We also use baking soda.

you might try lightly spritzing your carpet with vinegar and water mixed equally, let sit a few minutes then vacumn.
