Are Remote Control Household Vacuum Cleaners the Future of Home Cleaning?

Article by Jamie Francis

Fairly new to the market, robotic vacuums may claim to relieve you of one of the most common household tasks. Vacuuming is essential to provide a clean, healthy house, but will these new household vacuum cleaners really be able to handle the job? Can you sit back and relax while a robot cleans the dirt and debris off the floor?

How Do Remote Control Vacuum Cleaners Work?

This advanced style of vacuum cleaner works with various sensors to reach from corner to corner on your floor. With self navigation tools that are both built into the appliance and installed on your walls and in your doorways, this vacuum will run on its own power across the floor.

With the suction on at all times, the robotic propulsion moves the vacuum forward until it either reaches a sensor or bumps into a wall or a piece of furniture. At that point the vacuum will turn and head in another direction. This carries on until it is switched off or until the floor is clean. These appliances can also be run using a timer, which will shut off the power after a certain running time. This style of vacuum is bag less and has a low profile, meaning that it must be cleaned quite frequently in order to retain good suction and performance.

Features of Robotic Household Vacuum Cleaners

All robotic models will come with self navigation settings and tools. Many also have height adjusting settings that allow it to be used on deep pile carpets and hard surface floors alike. Timers are not as common, but are certainly available.

One of the most popular features on robotic vacuum cleaners is the dirt sensor. This senses the level of dirt and dust that has built up in the carpet or on the floor. When that sensor kicks in the vacuum will limit movement by employing sharp turns that bring the head back over that dirty spot again and again until the sensors identify that the area has been adequately cleaned.

A major problem with robotic vacuum cleaners is the assumption that they will leave your floors spotless. Robotic vacuums will do a good job cleaning the most used areas of a floor. They do work with barely any effort on your part – although you will need to charge the batteries, empty the collected dirt and set up the navigation sensors. They cannot see the floor in the same way that you can however, and so they cannot provide the level of cleanliness that you can.

Robotic vacuums cannot clean along the edges of walls and will not get into every space, no matter how long they run. If you expect a fair job with the minimal amount of work, robotic household vacuums cleaners will certainly deliver. But don
