Not A Full-Fledged Cleaning Solution, But A Handy And Lightweight Supplement, October 7, 2011

Perhaps the Dirt Devil Express Compact Bagged Canister (SD30035) oversells itself as the ideal solution for floor to ceiling vacuuming. It clearly is NOT. But from my perspective, considering the size and the power of the unit, that would be a pretty lofty expectation to fulfill. In no way did I think or anticipate that this tiny little baby (it’s the approximate size of an average frozen turkey) was going to replace my larger, bulkier, and more powerful floor vacuums. This handy and lightweight Dirt Devil is a supplementary cleaning product, and I love it. Again, to be clear, if I was trying to vacuum big rooms with this alone–this would be a nightmare. But it is terrific for places I don’t want to lug a bigger piece of machinery.

Here are a few examples of where the Dirt Devil Express has improved my life (and my back):

    1) Carpeted staircase
    2) Hard floors where I want to pick up light debris or dust bunnies
    3) On furniture and cushions
    4) Edges
    5) Around and underneath furniture

The unit, itself, is small and well designed. I really like the cord retraction. It does have three hose attachments: an upholstery brush, a crevice tool, and a furniture brush. There is a way to attach them all to the vacuum, but I don’t bother. It looks silly and the attachments tend to make the unit cumbersome as it is so small to begin with. My biggest complaint is that the vacuum bags may not be readily available in retail outlets as this doesn’t seem to be a traditional size. I’m not saying that they aren’t in stores, but I’ve glanced at three stores in my area that don’t carry them in their regular assortment. Of course, this being the Internet age, it’s not a big deal to order them online and have some in back-up. The initial purchase comes with the canister loaded with a bag and two spares.

If you are seeking to purchase your one and only vacuum, this is probably not a choice option. It’s small, really just a step-up from a handheld unit (although much more useful). But to add ease and convenience (and options) to your existing cleaning equipment, this is an easy recommendation. With your expectations in check, the Dirt Devil Express Compact can make a number of chores much simpler. KGHarris, 10/11.

As good as any small canister I’ve used but with style…, September 27, 2011

Four stars is the “I Like It” rating.

This Express has the same 12amp motor as all the other vacuums in the Dirt Devil line so don’t think you’ll get more suction even with their other models. MIGHT be some vacuum chamber design differences that improve suction in the various types but they don’t show you the insides anywhere I’ve found. It will suck your hand tight to the open nozzle with a feeling pretty much the same as our Eureka upright sweeper.

Listed as 13lbs on Amazon and 8.5lbs on Dirt Devil site, but with everything attached ready to store or carry to another location, digital scale reads 11lbs, still easy to lift with the handle even when holding in front of you going through doorways etc.

While on the subject of the handle, I’m tempted to grab the wand tube first since it sticks up when you have it in one of the two holding brackets depending on if you have vacuum horizontal or vertical. I think pushing pulling or any attempt to move the whole machine by using the wand will no doubt break the plastic bracket (2) that holds it sooner or later, not a very solid attachment piece, should be metal in my opinion, best to just get used to reaching for the handle on the base I think.

Overall a pretty solid little unit even though it’s made of plastic components except for the adjustable length extension wand and of course nuts bolts and screws.

I find that this is not a vacuum that you want for whole house cleaning, but you can get a room done in pretty short order and without many problems…. works better on hard floors and overhead with attachments supplied than on carpet. Short nap carpet or rugs should be okay, but deeper pile carpet is too much work with this Express model and I don’t think they intended for you to clean a whole floor with deep pile with it so can’t say it’s bad design etc.

One problem I have encountered is that the three wheels are set for forward/backward movement and it will not handle pulling it any other direction with the hose without tipping over at this light weight.
You just need to look back at the base now and then when you are going to move past the hose length to make sure it pointed in the direction you are going. The small third wheel toward the front does not caster at all.

Also know that except for the extension wand all other hose connections are plastic without detents or clips, just friction fit so I expect that these will loosen up over time. Even now as new, when I go to pull the wand from the holding bracket I’ve pulled the black plastic hose end off the metal tube before it detached from the bracket like it should.

Be carefull when you have your hand on the “grip” as well… if you are not paying attention (and why would you?) your thumb can open the port on top that is there to quick adjust the amount of suction (drapes, curtains)and then not get full power on the floor and wonder why. There is a main suction power adjustment on the base, but this is one on the wand also.

I went shopping for a package of replacement bags right away (unit ships with three bags) but didn’t have much luck finding an “AB” bag it uses in town or on-line. They must have created a new size/style bag for this one as even the other Dirt Devil models don’t use “AB” size. They DO have them on the Dirt Devil web site however and can be purchased as single bag to whatever quanity you want at very reasonable price as well. I’m sure by the time I need more bags they will be available locally or at Amazon, it’s just a new model and needs time to catch up to the market.

This Dirt Devil Express, has many nice features, and attachments…. I just would not want it to be my whole house vacuum cleaner, I still need the upright for large areas and thicker pile carpets/rugs but again, I don’t think they intended it to be used for other than touchup cleaning.
