Selecting Household Vacuum Cleaners

Selecting Household Vacuum Cleaners

Article by Phil Adams-Wright

What should you take into account when you try to make a selection from among the many available household vacuum cleaners? Here are some types and features that you should look at when making a decision on your next vacuum.

There is a canister type and an upright type. Which one you use will depend on your preferences. For instance, if you are the type of person who finds it a hassle to change attachments, you may lean toward canister type household vacuum cleaners, because they enable you to reach into corners, especially hard to reach ones, a bit more easily than the upright style allows.

Another choice that you will have to make is whether or not you wish to have a bagless unit or one that uses a bag. Most agree that both types are equally useful and functional. Household vacuum cleaners that are bagless may avoid the expense of purchasing extra bags. However, when you empty them, you’ll need to be careful not to allow dust to enter into the room. Some people opt to empty the container in the garage or outdoors, in order to get around this issue, or you may empty it slowly while it’s deep inside a plastic bag.

The bag type of household vacuum cleaners does require you to buy new bags, but you do not have to keep the filters clean, just as you would with a bagless unit. You also do not have to go through the issue of emptying a container. You simply remove the old bag and discard it and put the new one in.

What about the number of amps in household vacuum cleaners? Do the units with higher amps actually clean better than those with a lower amp rating? While the power of a unit is a factor to consider, truly it is the overall design and hardware of a machine which constitutes its efficiency. Therefore, a particular number of amps, per se, is not the only criterion of how well household vacuum cleaners work.

Most units include attachments, but these vary from one to another. Have a look at the accessories included and consider carefully how they will affect your ability to clean, not just floors but also other things like furniture, lampshades, blinds, mouldings and so on. You may also want to clean your car, appliances or vents with your household vacuum cleaner, so keep this in mind as you shop.
