Summer sun brings out the dust – so blitz it with a modern, efficient vacuum cleaner

Article by Jamie Francis

Nearly everyone loves the way the summer sun helps brighten up their home’s interior. Rays of sunlight flowing in through the windows on the long, bright summer days make everything seem that much more cheerful. But they also create another, less welcome, effect, by showing up areas where dust and debris have settled.

This could be a sign that your existing vacuum cleaner isn’t performing as well as it could. While there could be a host of reasons for this which can be remedied – such as the dust bag reaching its maximum capacity and needing emptying, or the brushes not working properly due to being incorrectly adjusted – it could just be that the trusty old dust-sucker just doesn’t have the dirt pulling power it once did. So it may well be time to shop for a replacement.

And with so many different designs and types of machine on the market, you won’t be short of choice. The first decision to make when buying a new vacuum cleaner is over the type of model you want, and this is usually largely dictated by the size of the task it will be expected to perform, and in particular, the dimensions of the rooms in your house. For cleaning small areas, a hand-held vacuum cleaner is likely to be well up to the task. These cleaners are the ultimate in portability, so can be used to get at difficult to clean spots throughout the house, such as along skirting boards and where the floor meets the walls.

The decision between a cylinder vacuum and an upright vacuum is down to personal preference. Upright models require minimal efforts to manoeuvre, and often boast greater suction, while a cylinder vacuum cleaner is ideal in smaller houses or flats, as it can be lifted onto above-floor surfaces to help afford access to hard-to-reach spots.

An increasing number of specialist vacuum cleaners are finding their way onto the market today. Spurred largely by the need to tackle specific types of dirt, such as pet hairs, and for steam-cleaning of carpets to get out deeply ingrained dirt, these types of cleaners are designed with a specific job in mind – for example, cleaning hard or wooden floors, which are becoming increasingly favoured. There’s no question, though, that whatever type of vacuum cleaner you choose, you should always buy from a retailer which offers a wide choice of models, because only by comparing what the leading manufacturers offer is it possible to find an appliance that you can be truly happy with for a long period.
