Things To Consider When Buying A Vacuum Cleaner

Article by Chris Huddle

Many people can get intimidated or confused when considering the options available in buying a new vacuum cleaner. Bag or bagless? Cyclones- one or many? HEPA filters? Here are some things to consider when making that important decision.

How powerful is the vacuum, and how much power is good? When you see the vacuum’s power rating listed as so many amps, remember that the amperage is merely stating how much electrical power is in the motor. While you can expect a vacuum motor rated at 10 or 12 amps to produce more suction, you might have experienced an otherwise powerful vacuum picking up next to nothing from a full bag or canister, worn belt, or worn beater brush. Not all motors rated 12 amps use that potential power with equal efficiency, and neglecting maintenance can reduce the suction a great amount.

Is a bag or bagless model better? Older model vacuum cleaners have the disposable bags to collect the dirt you pick up. You can expect the majority of these designs to gradually lose suction as the bag fills. While the newer bagless models mean one less item to buy, they also create a place in the dirt canister to have what is called cyclonic action. Vacuum cleaner cyclones are one or more quickly spinning vortexes created in the dirt canister by design that use centrifugal force to cause more dirt and dust to remain in the canister rather than move toward the exhaust stream. It would seem to make sense that multiple cyclones would sling out more dirt into the canister than a single cyclone.

Do I need a filter model vacuum? Bag model vacuums traditionally used the medium of the bag as a rudimentary filter. The high-efficiency HEPA bags were an improvement that prevented so much dust going back into your home’s air space. Even better still is the HEPA filter on most bagless vacuum models. It is generally believed that most people would filter dust and allergens from their vacuum’s exhaust if given a chance, and these filters can improve your interior air quality while you remove dirt from the floors.

Most HEPA filters on newer vacuum cleaners need to be replaced, which is an additional cost to consider. Some models offer a permanent HEPA filter that can be cleaned and reused for the life of the cleaner.

What attachments are good to have? While keeping in mind that the suction may not be as good with attachments compared to the floor action, look for a good attachment hose length. A powered upholstery / pet hair brush will help stir up particles to get them into the vacuum canister. Crevice tools are good to have when you need to reach places that the wide vacuum head will not go.
