Of course, buying a new vacuum is one possible answer- but we would like to avoid that if we can.
Sorry, I don’t know the specs on the vacuum. It is just a regular vacuum cleaner that uses bags.
It has a bad odor when turned on.
Can we clean the vacuum somehow- if we cleaned it and changed the bag, would that remedy this problem?
Thanks!
Cleaning and replacing the bag may help-it sounds like it may have gotten wet at one time. You couls also sprinkle baking soda lightly over your carpet and that may help absorb odours in the system. If the hose is detachable and any other pieces you can wash them with a vinegar solution.
Hope that helps.
The only reason a vacuum has ever smelled really bad for me is when the belt has worn out. It may be time to replace it.
The first thing to try would be to change the bag.
If that does not work, sprinkle some baking soda on the carpet & suck it into the unit. It neutralizes odors naturally.
yes change the bag and clean it.its the bag that smells.
try cleaning the bag. maybe you can wash it, so that you’re sure about it.
I can tell you from experience. Honestly. Get yourself a new vacuum.
You cannot clean out your vacuum, change the filter, add any deordorizer, etc. The fact is that It is discharging everything you suck up right back into the air.
It’s a bad vac. It has to be tossed.
I recommend a Eureka whirlwind model (there are many). They have two stages. One is a canister for catching just about everything, and the other is a HEPA filter for handling the finer particulate before the air is exhausted.
You can fight this all you want, but a new vac. is the real solution to your problem.
I bought a Dirt Devil Feather-lite a few years back, and the thing stunk so bad I could hardly stand to vacuum! I was so repulsed by it I just threw it out and got a different brand. However, after I threw it out I read somewhere that it had been recalled and I could of gotten my money back or the vacuum fixed! So, it’s worth a look up- just get the make and model # to look it up on-line!
I use Orick’s deodorizing tablets in ym vacuum bag. You don’t have to have an Oreck to use the tablets, they just go into the bag, and every time you turn it on, it makes the house smell good while you are vacuuming.
I’m assuming it is an upright, not a canister. It could be the belt that drives the rollers, (the thing that picks up the dirt). It could be the bag, I try to look at mine every month and make sure it isn’t over stuffed. If you have animals I notice that I have more of a smell in the winter, when my dogs are in the house compared to the summer when they are outside. If the thing that holds the bag is dirty clean it. If you have hose that expands see if it is clogged. And if all else fails there are scented beads you can buy at that you sprinkle on the floor and vacuum up, as well as powder.
Got a dog? Toss the bag and put in a new one. If you are even the least bit mechanically inclined, take it apart and clean it. You’ll probably find hairs and carpet fibers in the motor and in the bearings of the beater bar.
Remove the bag and wash out the vaccuum cleaner with a disinfectant (make sure to remove the motor and electronic parts.)
And if it still smells, maybe add a few drops of Vanilla Essence into the compartment where the bag is held.
Even washing out the vaccuuming pipes would help
