Most vacuum bags will work well with clothing. However, if you’re traveling then make sure that you will be able to get clothes back into the bag and vacuum packed no matter where you go. This may mean carrying around a manually operated vacuum pump. Make sure that it doesn’t take up more room in your backpack than you save, and make sure it’s a sturdy type which is unlikely to break if the backpack drops three stories onto concrete.
Also remember that just because the clothes take up less space, they don’t get lighter. You may be able to cram two washbaskets of clothes into one backpack using the vacuum system, but they’ll still weigh as much as they did originally. If you’re going to be wearing the backpack a lot on your travels, I’d advise filling it up with your travel gear first, and then wearing it around the house all day for a day or two to make sure you really do want to take everything that’s in there.
