1938 Hoover Model 160 Cleaning Ensemble

1938 Hoover Model 160 Cleaning Ensemble, made 1938-39/1946-49. UK version of 1935 US Model 150. This one is a rarer pre-war version, ‘By Appointment to the late King George V’. 340w 2-speed motor (although many, like this example, were converted to 1-speed only, since the 2-speed switch was prone to failing). Automatic height adjustment via ‘self-levelling’ wheels. Did not have the pedal-operated height adjustment system, or bag-full indicator, like it’s American cousin, but did have a new style handle without older pitch-fork style bail. Brought in a new, modern streamlined style, the work of famed machine-age designer Henry Dreyfuss. Chassis lighter in weight to older models thanks to use of magnesium – ‘the new airplane metal’. Motor hood, motor casing and tool kit made of bakelite. I have the manual, and part of a toolkit, to go with this machine. Sold initially alongside Models 375, 875 and 960. 875 was soon replaced by all-new Model 262, a lighter and more basic version of the 160. This example has been fully restored by me; the bag was washed and re-pressed, the motor was stripped, cleaned and rebuilt, the motor hood, handle-release pedal and bag ring were replaced, the furniture guard was repaired, and the chassis paintwork was cleaned.

  1. Cool! Does this model have carpet height adjustment? I noticed the interesting wheel setup in the rear.

  2. Hi there – no, the 160 did not have the complex height-adjustment like the 150. It just had what Hoover called ‘Self-Levelling’ wheels, two large front wheels and 2 small rear wheels. The theory was the front wheels would ride the carpet pile, and the back would sink in a little to keep the suction opening at the right height.

The rear axle is sprung, but this is for holding the suction opening off the floor when the tool converter is inserted.

  3. No, it’s no heavier than most modern cleaners. Think about it; the bag and the handle don’t weigh much!

  4. My Grandmother’s was a 1946 production year. She gave it to me in 1971 with all the attachments for my college dorm apartment and it still beats as it sweeps as it cleans in my home today. Not bad after 60+ years. Thanks Grandma…GFF 2009.
