Hoover Upright Vacuum – Combatting Dyson

Hoover Upright Vacuum – Combatting Dyson

Article by Leonora Backer

The first true portable electric vacuum cleaner was invented by one James Spangler in Canton, Ohio in 1907 when he modified a carpet sweeper that he used as a janitor in a department store and he went on to patent the idea in 1908 after he had added a cloth, dust collection bag and removable cleaning attachments. It was from this first patented machine that along with his cousin William Hoover, they successfully cornered the electric house cleaning market in most of the English speaking world over the next 50 years.

In 1908, the first bag on a stick Hoover upright vacuum cleaner was patented and introduced to a sceptical world and not unusually, failed to set the world alight. As the machine worked so well, they were confident it would sell if only people would try it which is why they offered a free home trial over 10 days to everyone, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Hoover has remained the pre-eminent vacuum cleaner in most households throughout the U.S and Great Britain over the last 100 years. So much so that in Britain, where the Hoover upright vacuum has been made since 1919, any one who is vacuuming anything is said to be ‘hoovering’.

The basic concept of the vacuum cleaner really stayed the same from those early days with a dust collection bag right up until 1993 when Dyson revolutionized the cleaner by producing a dual cyclone cleaner that required no bag. A true story of the backyard inventor made good. This new kid on the block was an instant hit, a little pricey for many households but then you didn’t have to keep buying new collection bags as you filled them up, and perhaps more importantly it showed the other vacuum companies, including Hoover that they had to raise their game.

The Hoover upright vacuum stable has recently been expanded to include both bagged and bagless models in their Wind Tunnel Range, some models are also self-propelled so no pushing. And to compete with Dyson, Hoover also now have a cyclone cleaner, giving all the cleaning power but not the cost. Further to maintain their position as the providers of vacuum cleaners to the masses, Hoover also produces the Widepath Tempo cleaner which has a recommended retail price of under 0.

You know if you or anyone in your family suffers from allergies that a vacuum fitted with HEPA filters is the way forward. A cleaner with a HEPA filtration capacity is the answer to allergens. If you want to eradicate pollen, pet allergies and mites and dust from your home, a HEPA filtered Hoover upright vacuum does all this.

There are once again, as was the case for most of the last century, more top rated Hoover upright vacuum cleaners than any other brand as they provide excellent quality, refined over many years and fantastic value for money.
