Can a leaf blower / vacuum safely vacuum straw ?

I recently had my back yard installed and the contractor put down straw over the new grass. Now that the grass is in, I’d like to rake the straw up into piles. My Poulan Pro BVM200VS Blower/Vac has a bag attachment and I was wondering if it would hurt it to vacuum up the straw.

Thanks

  1. This could damage your blower/vac. A lawnmower with a grass catcher would handle your project well. Raise the deck to at least 3 inches to maintain a healthy, newly seeded lawn area.

  2. I personaly would leave the straw where it is. Its one of the best items that break down and adds a natural admendment to your soil. It gives your soil a nice mulch that will help on watering.

The only reason I would remove some of the straw, would be if it was impeading seed growth (to thick). But if your lawn is growing and nice and green. I’d leave it be. When you start to mow, after the grass reaches 3 inches or more. The speed of the blade as it cuts will pull up the straw and shred it finer. I would then add all of this to a compost bin, to add later to your flower and shrub beds.
Now you can use the blower, but remember, is the grass established? good root base?
You don’t want to suck it up. And you don’t want to burn new grass blades that are growing. A loose blade rake here and there might be just the trick. If its the sight of the straw that is bothering you. Try to remember, as it breaks down, its feeding the soil.
