Most have air filters. Try changing that.
Try putting a car air freshner inside the vacume bag or cylinder (if bagless) it works really well.
Some vaccums have those nice smelling deoderizer tabs try asking around or looking around where they sell vaccums. I think its time to get rid of the carpet.. no offense but weve gone though the same thing and no problems since. Especially if you have pets the vaccum and the rug will have a bad smell until its cleaned or ripped up and replaced.
