How to choose a vacuum cleaner
Article by Steve Hammer
Nearly everybody will have to get a good vacuum cleaner someday in their lives yet there are lots of different styles and types that it can easily be complicated to come up with a choice. That is why you must educate yourself a little bit before you go shopping in order to make sure you get the best vacuum for you. The different styles of house hold vacuums are the canister style, the upright style, the stick style, along with the robotic vacuum cleaner. The following is a detailed description for each style of vacuum to help remove some of the confusion.
Upright Vacuums – Upright vacuums sit upright exactly like the name implies. The beater bar and suction head are generally at the bottom with the motor, while the actual bag or debris container is up higher built into the handle. These particular vacuum cleaners often employ a nice wide suction head which in turn makes for fast cleaning and they do a very good job at deep cleaning large carpeted surfaces. Most of them are heavy and the user needs to move the entire machine back and force which unfortunately requires more physical effort than other types of vacuums. They can also be awkward for vacuuming stairs.
Canister Vacuums – Canister vacuums consist of two individual sections with a hose running between them. The canister section has wheels on it making it easy to drag around and it contains the motor and vacuum bag. The suction section consists of the beater bar, suction head and handle. Due to the fact the suction section doesn’t contain the motor the unit is much lighter versus an upright style vacuum. This will make it better suited for cleaning drapes, furniture, stairs, and hard flooring. Most canister vacuums will not clean carpets as good as uprights do; however they will usually make less noise. Given that they have two different sections on the whole they can be heavier and more cumbersome to store than an upright vacuum.
Stick Vacuums – Stick Vacuums are basically really light weight upright vacuums. Most of them are battery powered and need to be plugged in to recharge. They definitely are not as powerful as a typical upright or canister vacuum but are perfect for fast clean ups in your home when you don’t want to haul out the full-size vacuum. Their small size and light weight makes you more likely to use this type of vacuum on a daily basis for quick cleaning and then use a larger full-sized vacuum once per week.
Robotic Vacuums – Robotic vacuums are a newer invention that have become popular recently. They are low profile and use rechargeable batteries. You just position the vacuum on to the floor in the space you need cleaned, set it to clean and let it do it’s thing. They do not clean as well as a normal full-sized vacuum but are fully automated. They work great in some rooms but if you have lots of different surfaces like heavy throw carpets they may have issues climbing on as well as off the rugs. They also have a tendency to get tangled on tassels on the edges of the carpet. When you have furniture that sits close to the floor the vacuum can easily become wedged between the floor and furniture creating additional problems. Robotic vacuums are usually most suitable for large open spaces with hard surfaces and few obstacles.
