Non-manufacturer vacuum belt and bags?

I feel like I should rename myself "Totally Clueless" for this question, but…

Is it possible to find generic vacuum bags/belts, or must one buy the manufacturer’s part number? I have a Kenmore upright vacuum. I have always purchased the Kenmore parts, but I have moved to a small town without a Sears. Is there any chance I can find the parts I need, or should I just order them online?

  1. Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, home Depot and many grocery stores will have them. Or if there is a janitorial supply, they carry many or most brands or will get them for you.

  2. Unless you live in Podunk, MO., I’d bet that your local yellow pages would yield at least one if not more, vac repair shops. They will most certainly carry a line of replacement parts, bags, belts, bulbs, etc., that will take care of your problem. Contrary to popular belief, in most cases, the parts will be less expensive at a local store than buying online and paying the shipping.
