Review for Hoover C1404 Elite Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Article by Lee Harris

The Hoover C1404 Elite Bagged Upright is a lightweight vacuum with a 12” cleaning path and a 7.1 AMP motor, giving it average suction for a residential vacuum cleaner. The brush height is easily adjustable and at only 11 pounds, it is a good unit for multi-level environments and even includes a maid hook which allows the operator to transport it with other cleaning products.

The Hoover C1404 includes an outer debris collection bag made of quality materials, allergen filtration, and a 1 year warranty. The Type A vacuum cleaner bags that fit the C1404 model are low-priced and easily available, although changing the bag can be somewhat difficult. The cord on the Hoover C1404 is 31 feet, which can be a problem in settings that are not residential.

While Hoover parts are readily available at most vacuum stores, the problem with the C1404 is that it seems cheaply constructed to begin with and does not come with even an optional tool kit. The small plastic wheels, plastic brush roll and lack of a brush edge cleaner make this vacuum seem more like a sweeper than a serious upright. Without a hose and wand and with no available tools, the cleaning range of this vacuum is extremely limited, despite its portability. There is also no option for a dirt cup.

At 0-0, the Hoover C1404 Elite Bagged Upright is simply too overpriced considering how limited its functions are. This lightweight machine boasts an impressively sized motor, but without an edge cleaner or accessory tools, the user risks the need to rely on an entirely different machine to complete the job. Other complications with the Hoover C1404 include a tendency to clog frequently when debris contains anything more than simple dust and the fact that the cord is relatively short. The fact that even the Type A bag is hard to change makes this seemingly hassle-free vacuum seem like more of a bother than it is worth.

The Hoover C1404 is a terrific machine if it is intended for a quick pass or two to tidy up an already almost clean area, much as a sweeper would do, but in terms of actually cleaning an area, it leaves a lot to be desired at that price. For light traffic areas a sweeper may do a better job at a fraction of the cost. There is no doubt that there are better vacuum cleaners in the same price category, many of them including the wands and tools so sorely lacking on the C1404. For only a little more money, there are machines that are far superior, having not only more power and wider cleaning paths, but also necessary tools and better filtration.

For residential applications, the Hoover C1404 may be an appropriate machine, but for anything more than light vacuuming, the operator may want to consider a more capable vacuum cleaner to cover the variety of areas the average user typically experiences when cleaning.
