  1. First off, replace the filters. If that doesn’t work and if you can, take the hoses off and run them through the dishwasher or handwash them. It’s likely stuff just caught in the filter that is causing it, but you could also have stuff caught in the coils of the hoses.

  2. You are probably just knocking odors loose that are caught in the fibers of the carpet. Kind of like scratching a scratch and sniff…you know? The smell is always there, but you activate it with the scratching to be more intense.

What I would do is ONE of two options. NOT together!

Sprinkle dry baking soda on the carpet before you vacuum. Leave it there for about 10 minutes. If you want you can also scrub it in there with a broom, let it sit, then vac it up. Baking soda neutralizes odor.

OR you can vac as usual, letting the odor come up, then spray the carpet/room with a vinegar water solution (about half and half). Vinegar also neutralizes odor.

Either one is a friendly chemical that shouldn’t set off any allergies and is cheap and non-toxic to kids and pets.

  3. If your vacuum is anything like mine, the disposable bag is contained in a fabric bag. It’s likely that there was some spillage when you changed the bag. Try removing the bag and cleaning the outer bag thoroughly. There’s probably a lot of dirt, dust, and pet dander trapped in there.
