Does anyone have advise for a really good vacuum cleaner, as in good price to value? Ours is a vacuum looker, no longer a vacuum cleaner!

  1. A couple of rules I’ve learned: gadgets cost more, but don’t do more. Bright colors look nice on the vac but don’t help clean the floor.

You can throw your money away on the flashy Dyson or the highly-regarded Kirby, but really it comes down to: does it suck up dirt? Does it get it all? That’s where the rubber meets the road.

So the best vacuum – or “hoover,” to use the UK slang – is going to be the cheapest, most basic that still has a history of reliability and good performance. At work I exclusively use Sanitaire vacuums. Sanitaire is a commercial brand, and a very basic design. If you’re looking for hose attachments and two speeds, shop elsewhere. Sanitaire picks up the dirt and puts it in a bag. That’s it. Eureka used to make Sanitaire (but Eureka got bought up), but the same old design is still in production, and has been for about the last thirty years. That ought to tell you something.

Belts are cheap. Bags are cheap. Beater bars and impellers are cheap. I can take one completely apart, replace each of those listed items and have it back together in under thirty minutes. If you can get them where you are, a Sanitaire is a good choice.

  2. Henry hoover works best. If you have pets, you can get special Henry hoovers. I have had mine for about 6 years and no problems
