  1. mine gets like that when i have vaccumed under the dining room table. ( the food) i always buy those sheets of air fresheners and cut off small pieces and put them in my air filter. dont cover the whole vent, just about 3 inches or so. you have to change it every few months, because it dries out, but when i vaccum my house smells like vanilla. its great. its a trick i learned from my best friends mom a few years ago

  2. It’s just the smell of everything you have ever sucked up in the vacuum. I suggest finding some pleasant smelling herb, like lavender, and vacuuming it up and letting it sit in your vacuum. Baking soda is also great for odors, you could try vacuuming up baking soda meant for cat litter boxes. If all else fails try taking into a vacuum place for service. They should take it apart and clean everything. Good luck!

edit: I should have said dried herb, not fresh herb.

  3. My parents had an old vacuum that also did this, even tho’ they kept it in great condition. Hard to describe that nasty odor, isn’t it? Anyway, sounds like Betsy needs to be put out to pasture and YOU need something more updated. Try a bagless….you’ll love it!

  4. It really is the filter, but it may be so old that it’s just too late. I would chuck it for a new one!

  5. Try throwing down some plain old fashion Baking Soda and sweep it up. This will usually make contact with all the areas inside the sweeper and freshen it up.

  6. Put a scented Fabric softener sheet that use put in your dryer into your vacuum bag. That should help a lot.

  7. It might be that it’s old and you need to buy a new one, dirty so you need to clean it from the inside or the bag is full and it just needs to be emptied or replaced.
